The most common trevally in Victorian waters, the silver trevally is a tenacious fighter and uses its body shape to great effect when hooked, often making anglers believe they have a much bigger fish on the line. These fast fish belong to the same family as yellowtail, pilot fish, runner, dart, turrum, queenfish, samson fish and kingfish and have a powerful body built for a fight.
SIZE: Estuary juveniles from 0.5kg, open water adults up to 5kg.
WHERE: Estuaries, reefs and open headlands, often caught from ocean breakwaters.
TACKLE: Light tackle with 1/0 or 3/0 baitholder or suicide pattern hook, small metal lures.
BAIT: Fish strips, whole peeled prawns, squid, worms, whitebait, pipi, nippers. Small metal lures, spoons, chrome slices, small minnow lures.
BITE: Trevally have a soft bite and soft mouths yet are determined fighters. Skill and patience is needed to avoid pulling the hook.
EATING: An excellent table fish, the silver trevally should be bled soon after capture.
